The Champaign County Democratic Central Committee is accepting applications for the upcoming Champaign County Treasurer/Collector vacancy. Current County Treasurer/Collector Cassandra “CJ” Johnson has announced she will retire on February 28th, 2025. Treasurer Johnson was slated as the Treasurer candidate by the Party in 2020, and elected to a full term in 2022. The individual nominated to fill the vacancy will serve the remainder of Treasurer Johnson’s current term and will be eligible to run for a full term in 2026.

During her tenure, Treasurer Johnson upheld the mission of the Office to professionally manage all aspects of the tax billing, collecting, and disbursement process, and ensured County funds were managed in a fiscally responsible manner. Treasurer Johnson leaves the Office in a significantly better state than she inherited and the Party is grateful for her leadership and commitment to financial integrity, and thanks her deeply for her service.

To identify the best candidate to fill the vacancy, the Party has organized an internal nomination committee to vet applicants. The nomination committee will make a recommendation to the full Democratic Central Committee for approval to be submitted as the Party choice to the Champaign County Board Chair. The County Board will make the official vote to fill the vacancy.

The nomination committee is composed of Champaign County Democratic Central Committee 2nd Vice-Chair Matt Sullard, Secretary Will Schoell, Treasurer Michelle Jett, and current County Board Members Stephanie Fortado, Finance Committee Chair, and Elly Hanauer-Friendman, Finance Committee member.
